A short lap in the mountains
The circuit at Spielberg sits in the green hills of Styria, in central Austria. It opened in 1969 as the Österreichring, a sweeping, very fast track that ran across the hillside.
In 1996 it was rebuilt as a much shorter circuit, and after a major renovation it returned to the world championship in 2014. Today's lap has only ten corners and is one of the shortest of the season, so the field is tightly packed and small mistakes are punished.
Corner by corner
- Turn 1. A heavy stop uphill at the end of the start straight, into a tight right-hander.
- The climb to Turn 3. A long uphill straight to the slowest corner of the lap, a hairpin right at the top of the hill and a favourite place to overtake.
- Turn 4. Another heavy stop after a downhill straight, into a right-hander.
- The middle section. A run of fast and medium corners flowing back down the hill.
- The last two corners. Two quick right-handers that open onto the start straight, where a good exit sets up the next lap.
How to be fast here
Three big stops decide a lap of Spielberg: Turns 1, 3 and 4. Brake late but straight for each, then get the power down early on the exits, because every corner here leads onto a straight.
