One title decided at the very last corner and a winning run deep in Texas. Here is what happened in Formula 1 on 2 November.
2008: Hamilton wins the title at the last corner
Lewis Hamilton became world champion for the first time at the Brazilian Grand Prix, the final round of 2008, by one point from Ferrari's Felipe Massa.
Hamilton arrived at Interlagos seven points ahead, 94 to 87. Massa did all he could: he won from pole, 13.298 seconds clear of Renault's Fernando Alonso.
Rain arrived in the closing laps. On lap 69 Hamilton ran wide and Sebastian Vettel took fifth from him, leaving the McLaren driver sixth and out of the title.
Toyota's Timo Glock had stayed out on dry-weather tyres while almost every other driver pitted for intermediates. On the final lap he lost grip, and Vettel and Hamilton passed him in the last corners.
Fifth place was enough. Hamilton finished on 98 points to Massa's 97, and became the youngest champion in Formula 1 history at that time, a record Vettel took in 2010.
2014: Hamilton makes it five in a row in Austin
Six years later to the day, Hamilton won the United States Grand Prix for Mercedes. It was his fifth win in a row and his tenth of the 2014 season.
Team-mate Nico Rosberg started from pole but finished second, 4.314 seconds behind. Daniel Ricciardo was third for Red Bull.
Only 18 cars started. Caterham and Marussia had both gone into administration and were given permission to miss the race.
The win stretched Hamilton's lead over Rosberg to 24 points, 316 to 292, with two rounds left. He went on to win the title in Abu Dhabi.
