Penalties drop Piastri and both Alpines out of F1 Mexico points

Post-race penalties for Oscar Piastri, Franco Colapinto and Pierre Gasly reshaped the Mexico City Grand Prix result and gave Ryo Hirakawa a debut point.

Oscar Piastri and both Alpine drivers lost their points from the Mexico City Grand Prix after the stewards handed out three time penalties once the race had finished.

The changes moved four drivers up the order and gave Haas stand-in Ryo Hirakawa a point on his Formula 1 debut.

Piastri penalised for Lindblad crash

Piastri crossed the line seventh for McLaren, but he was given a 10-second time penalty for his collision with Racing Bulls' Arvid Lindblad.

The McLaren driver tried to pass Lindblad around the outside at turn 1. His front-right wheel hit the back of Lindblad's car at turn 2 and sent the Racing Bulls into the barriers, ending Lindblad's race.

The stewards ruled that Piastri was "never fully alongside", so he had no right to the corner. They said he could have avoided the crash by moving further left, even if that meant leaving the track. Piastri dropped to 13th in the final classification.

Alpine lose eight points

Franco Colapinto and Pierre Gasly crossed the line eighth and 10th, and briefly moved up to seventh and ninth after Piastri's penalty. Both were then penalised for not slowing enough under yellow flags, which warn drivers of danger on the track.

Colapinto got a 10-second penalty for a single waved yellow flag and fell to 15th. The stewards cleared him over a double waved yellow in the previous sector.

Gasly was given a stop-and-go penalty for ignoring double waved yellows. Because the race had finished, it became 30 seconds added to his time, and he dropped to 17th, the last classified finisher.

Who gained

Liam Lawson moved up to seventh for Racing Bulls. Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto rose to eighth and Red Bull's Isack Hadjar to ninth.

Hirakawa, called up by Haas on the Friday night of the race weekend, took 10th place and a point in his first Grand Prix.

What it means

The penalties left Racing Bulls on 108 points and Alpine on 69 in the fight for fifth in the constructors' championship, a gap of 39 points.

The next round is the São Paulo Grand Prix at Interlagos. The race starts at 10:30pm India time on Sunday 8 November.
