Herta to run Perez's Cadillac in F1 practice at Interlagos

Colton Herta will drive in first practice at the São Paulo Grand Prix after a mix-up left him one point short of an F1 superlicence.

Colton Herta will take over Sergio Perez's Cadillac in first practice at this weekend's São Paulo Grand Prix at Interlagos.

The American needs one more point to reach the 40 required for an FIA superlicence, the licence every F1 race driver must hold.

One point short

Cadillac expected Herta to complete his total in first practice at the Mexico City Grand Prix last weekend. A mix-up over his past IndyCar championship positions meant he was still one point short.

Drivers earn superlicence points from their results in other series, and one point for each F1 practice session in which they cover at least 100 kilometres. Herta has 39.

His practice run at Monza earlier this season did not count. His car broke down before he had covered the full distance.

A sixth outing of the season

Interlagos will be Herta's sixth first practice session for Cadillac this year. Teams only have to give a rookie four such sessions a season, so the extra run is purely about his licence.

To earn the point he must cover 100 kilometres on Friday, which at Interlagos means at least 24 laps.

Herta is in the running for a Cadillac race seat in 2027, alongside Perez. He cannot race in F1 without the licence.

When to watch

First practice in São Paulo starts at 9:00pm India time on Friday 6 November. The race starts at 10:30pm India time on Sunday 8 November.

Race it on Late Brake

Interlagos is one of the six real circuits in Late Brake, the free browser game. Herta needs 24 clean laps on Friday: set your own run of laps, then race your ghost and chase the gold medal time.
