Lewis Hamilton took pole position for the Mexico City Grand Prix, his first in a Grand Prix since joining Ferrari.

His lap of 1:16.514 beat Mercedes' George Russell by 0.009 seconds and gave Ferrari its first pole of the 2026 season.

Nine thousandths of a second

Russell had gone fastest with a 1:16.523 on the final runs of the top-10 shootout, before Hamilton found just enough to beat him.

Charles Leclerc, quickest in both Friday practice sessions, made it a Ferrari one-three in qualifying, 0.119 seconds off pole. Max Verstappen was fourth for Red Bull, 0.178 seconds back, after locking up at turn 13 on his last lap.

Championship leader Kimi Antonelli was fifth, 0.193 seconds behind, and McLaren's Lando Norris sixth.

Penalties shuffle the grid

Verstappen and Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson each carry a one-place grid penalty for their collision in Friday practice.

That moves Antonelli up to fourth on the grid, with Verstappen fifth. Lawson qualified eighth and swaps places with his team-mate Arvid Lindblad.

Oscar Piastri was knocked out in the second part of qualifying in 13th, saying his McLaren had no rear grip. Ryo Hirakawa, called up by Haas to replace Esteban Ocon, was 19th on his debut weekend.

What happens next

Antonelli needs two points on Sunday to become Formula 1's youngest world champion.

The race starts at 1:30am on Monday 2 November, India time (2pm on Sunday in Mexico City).

Race it on Late Brake

Mexico City is not one of Late Brake's circuits, but the next race is. Interlagos is one of six real circuits in the free browser game. Set a qualifying-style lap with the cockpit camera and see how close you can get to the gold medal time.
