Kimi Antonelli became the youngest world champion in Formula 1 history by finishing third at the Mexico City Grand Prix on Sunday.
The Mercedes driver is 20, more than three years younger than Sebastian Vettel was when he set the old record in 2010. He sealed the title with four rounds of the season still to go.
A quiet drive to the title
Antonelli arrived in Mexico with a 123-point lead over his Mercedes team-mate George Russell, and knew ninth place or better would make him champion.
He stayed out of trouble while the drivers around him fought, and finished third in a race interrupted by a red flag.
On the slowing-down lap, the tearful Italian struggled to speak on the radio before telling his team: "Thank you so much. We did it. We did it."
He is the first Italian world champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953. Antonelli took the championship lead at the third round, after wins in China and Japan, and has won nine Grands Prix this season.
Verstappen wins as Ferrari fight
Red Bull's Max Verstappen won the race, his third win in the last four Grands Prix. Lewis Hamilton was second for Ferrari after starting from pole, and Leclerc finished fourth.
The Ferraris went wheel to wheel on the opening lap. Leclerc took the lead from Hamilton by going around the outside at turn 4, but ran off the track and was given a five-second penalty.
Verstappen moved ahead of Leclerc at the first round of pit stops.
Red flag and a sprint to the flag
The race was stopped on lap 46 of 71 after Cadillac's Valtteri Bottas crashed with what appeared to be a suspension failure.
That set up a 25-lap dash after the restart. Hamilton and Verstappen made contact at the first chicane, and Hamilton then spent the closing laps unable to get close enough to attack.
What happens next
The fight for second in the championship goes on. The next round is the São Paulo Grand Prix at Interlagos on Sunday 8 November.
Race it on Late Brake
Mexico City is not one of Late Brake's circuits, but the next race is. Interlagos is one of six real circuits in the free browser game: race the AI rivals, then go after the gold medal time before the new champion gets there.
